Ingredients

Toffee Base
  • 1 pack Saltine Crackers Feel free to swap with graham crackers or pretzel crisps for a fun twist.
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Salted butter can be used; reduce added salt if so.
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar Light or dark brown sugar works well.
Topping
  • 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Dark chocolate can be substituted for less sweetness.
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Coconut sugar can be a healthier alternative.
  • 1 tablespoon Cinnamon Adjust to liking; cayenne pepper can be mixed in for a spicy kick.
  • 1 teaspoon Sea Salt Regular table salt can be used if sea salt is unavailable.

Equipment

  • large baking sheet
  • Medium saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the unsalted butter and brown sugar. Stir constantly until it bubbles and darkens, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  4. Once ready, pour the toffee evenly over the arranged saltine crackers and spread with a spatula. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, watching closely.
  5. Sprinkle semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot toffee and allow to melt for about 5 minutes.
  6. Mix granulated sugar and cinnamon in a bowl, then sprinkle over the melted chocolate and add a pinch of sea salt.
  7. Let the toffee cool at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes before breaking into pieces.
  8. Serve on a platter or store in an airtight container.

Notes

For best results, monitor the toffee closely while baking, as it can burn quickly. Allow it to cool completely before breaking for clean edges. You can personalize sweetness by adjusting sugar and chocolate amounts.
