Ingredients

  • 1 package 17.3 ounces frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed
  • 8 ounces sliced ham
  • 8 ounces sliced cheddar cheese
  • 1 large egg beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley chopped (for garnish)

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each sheet of puff pastry to smooth out creases. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares (total of 8 squares).
  3. Place 4 squares on the prepared baking sheet. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on each square.
  4. Layer 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of cheddar cheese on top of the mustard on each square. Season with garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Top each stack with another puff pastry square. Press the edges to seal, and use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
  6. Brush the tops of each pastry stack with the beaten egg to give them a golden color when baked.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicy kick, add a layer of sliced jalapeños or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes before adding the cheese.
  • Substitute the ham with turkey or chicken for a different flavor profile, or use a mix of cheeses like mozzarella and pepper jack for added creaminess.
