Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef brisket
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional
  • 8 hamburger buns
  • Pickles and coleslaw for serving optional

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. In a large oven-safe pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and caramelized, about 10 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Remove the onions and garlic from the pot and set aside. Season the brisket with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. In the same pot, sear the brisket on all sides until browned, about 4-5 minutes per side.
  4. Once the brisket is browned, return the onions and garlic to the pot. Add the beef broth, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and cayenne pepper (if using). Stir to combine.
  5. Cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the preheated oven. Cook for 3 to 4 hours, or until the brisket is fork-tender.
  6. Remove the pot from the oven and carefully take out the brisket. Let it rest for 10-15 minutes before shredding it with two forks.
  7. Return the shredded brisket to the pot and stir it into the sauce. Allow it to soak up the flavors for about 10 minutes on the stovetop over low heat.
  8. Serve the caramelized pulled beef brisket on hamburger buns with pickles and coleslaw, if desired.

  • For a spicier kick, add diced jalapeños to the onion mixture.
  • Try using a slow cooker instead of the oven; cook on low for 8 hours for an even more tender brisket.
